Chris Long talks about his new work!

クリス・ロングさんに最新作「Nightingale Lane」シリーズについてインタビューしました!

Chris Long Q&A

Q1 Why did you put the series name as Nightingale Lane"?
1. Nightingale Lane is the street that I live on -here in London.

Q2, How did you get the idea of the new series?

2. I was walking around my neighborhood and people watching. It
occurred to me that there are so many interesting people
around on the streets- why don't I make them the subject of my work?
Then I realised that there was so much great material right
outside my front door.

Q3, How do you pick the person you draw, if you have any model.
Or  how do you decide what kind of person you draw?

3. The people that eventually end up in an artwork are kind of
amalgams of various people I've seen around. So there's not
really any piece that is a specific portrait. Sometimes I'll notice
that a person has an interesting look or it may be a group of friends
or a family.

Q4, This new series, theme is fashion, right?  What kind of fashion or
fashion brand you like?
4. Well yes, fashion is part of the theme, especially about the young
adults or teens. For myself I like to wear classic American brands,
Levis, Red Wing Boots, Pendleton Shirts, Woolrich Parkas. Carharrt is
good too. I mix that with classic British styles like Paul Smith and
Cordings.

Q5, In UK, is illustration for commercial purpose is popular? If so,  can you give us example?

5.  Yes, illustration is still very popular for commercial use.
Vodaphone had a very big campaign using lots of illustration that ran  until recently.
There's always new styles being used...

Q6, what kind of client or field you would like to do a job in Japan with this new series?

6.  I would hope that Japanese clients would see that I have an eye
for capturing people and the way they dress and their style generally.
Maybe I could illustrate fashion articles or book jackets. I'd like
to think that the people I am illustrating are fairly universal and
most people would recognise them as a type they see or know already.

Thank you, Chris!
